Applying heat to fabrics

The  example below consists of 2 layers of acrylic painted plastics, the type you get on postal bags. These plastics were placed between 2 layers of baking paper and lightly ironed to distort them, and then allowed to cool before being removed. Small pieces of hand dyed silk organza were placed on some of the heat created openings. These unique shapes were then free motion machined using various coloured threads onto a felt backing. Additional frayed pieces of the silk were also added around the edge of the plastic to soften off the plastic's hard edges. These areas too were then free motion machined.  I called the piece "The Whirling Dervishes".
